When Is The Best Time Of The Year To Replace A Boiler?

Much like how the use of your boiler is seasonal, so is the best time to get it serviced, inspected and replaced.

Generally, the best time to get your boiler replaced is when your current boiler breaks, is on the verge of breaking or has become so inefficient that it is more cost-effective to replace it than to keep paying repair bills and increased energy bills.

Whilst it will take until June before the energy price cap changes and makes efficient use of gas even more important, many people are considering whether to replace their boiler and stop worrying about the future of their heating system for the next decade and beyond.

If you are in that position, a big question to ask is about timing. Is there a best time of the year to book a boiler replacement? If so, when? And what happens if your boiler desperately cannot wait?

Why Is It Important To Time Boiler Replacements?

Timing matters a lot when it comes to renovations and repairs, and replacing your boiler is a particularly seasonal endeavour compared to a lot of the work you may need doing around your house.

Specifically, the time of year you get your boiler replaced affects:

  • Costs –  Due to higher demand, most boiler engineers will charge more to install a boiler during the peak season for breakdowns compared to warmer conditions.
  • Dates – Booking appointments at short notice when engineers are being called out for emergencies means that it is harder to get it replaced at a time which suits you.
  • Comfort – The more you need your central heating and hot water, the more frustrating the work itself can be, as you may have to spend the installation time cold or outside of the house whilst you wait for it to be completed.

Obviously, failing boilers do not always work to schedule, and if you need emergency boiler work, you should get it sorted, no matter what time of year, but it can have an effect on your expenses.

When Is The Best Time Of The Year To Replace Your Boiler?

There is a five-month window from late spring until early autumn, which is the most ideal time to get your boiler replaced, with May and September being the months when heating demand is at its lowest and boiler engineers are usually more available.

There are a few reasons why choosing May or September is best:

  • Temperature And Weather – The best days to work on a boiler are when the weather is neither too hot nor too cold.
  • Engineer Availability – In winter, engineers will often be needed for emergency repairs and callouts, so booking earlier means less time waiting and typically a quicker completion time.
  • Parts Availability – Manufacturers will typically have a wider range of models available, and the pricing can sometimes be more competitive than in winter, although this can vary depending on the amount of work that needs doing.
  • Improved Energy Efficiency – Completing the work before you need your boiler means that you get the benefits of a more efficient heating system throughout the winter months.
